About the job

For positions in Audit division:

  • Examination and review of applications submitted to Non-Resident Dispositions team; example, non-residents selling or disposing of real estate
  • Examination and review of applications submitted to International Waivers team; example, non-residents coming to Canada to perform services in different industries, such as TV & film, performers, construction, consulting etc.
  • Examination and review of applications submitted to Estates & Trusts for Clearance Certificates; example, deceased persons, corporations and personal trusts who are winding up
  • Examining & reviewing T1 Income Tax Returns

 For positions in a Liaison Officers program team (Audit division):

  • Assist the liaison officer in his tasks that include but are not limited to : 
    • Contacts via telephone and visits a taxpayer's place of business.
    • Provide income tax support and guidance and addresses tax-related (fiscal or accounting basis) questions raised by taxpayer.
    • Provides general information on tax obligations and advises the taxpayer about recurring errors common to the taxpayer's business sector.

For positions in Business Intelligence and Quality Assurance (BIQA):

  • Analyze tax returns, leads, referrals and various requests for tax compliance issues.
  • Perform various searches in CRA systems, external databases and / or on the Internet.
  • Assist screeners with the preparation of screening packages by gathering the required information from the CRA systems.
  • Prepare reports using excel or various other systems.
  • Assist Quality Assurance officers in the analysis of audit files.
  • Prepare comparative tables of the various files analyzed in Quality Assurance.

For positions in  Legislative Policy and Regulatory Affairs(LPRA):

  • Review license applications for license renewals (cannabis and alcohol), performing investigations to ensure applicants meet the requirements for licensing and making recommendations to approve, reject or refuse the applications;
  • Ensuring that security levels, where applicable, are and remain sufficient;
  • Assist duty officers during cannabis audits and regulatory reviews
  • Verify that activities of licensees and registrants fall within the provisions of the relevant legislation;
  • Tour cannabis production facilities (virtually), understand and document the inventory process.
  • Observe cannabis product and stamp destruction (virtually).
  • Perform outreach to Canadians on the new Fuel Charge program that has been implemented across the country.
     

Training for all positions is a combination of virtual collaborative sessions (MS Teams groups), self-study, and hands-on learning with support from experienced staff.

On October 6, 2021, the Government of Canada announced details of its plans to require vaccination across the federal public service. As a separate and large federal employer, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) supports and will follow this new policy direction.

As of November 8, 2021, all employees of the CRA, including new hires, are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless accommodated based on a medical contraindication, religion, or another prohibited ground for discrimination as defined under the Canadian Human Rights Act and attest to their vaccination status. 

The requirement to be fully vaccinated applies to all employees and new hires, whether they are teleworking, working remotely or working on-site. This condition of employment applies to indeterminate (permanent), determinate (term), and student hiring. Should you reach the point in the staffing process where it is necessary to verify conditions of employment, there will be a requirement to complete an attestation of vaccination status.

 

Please note that this process will be used to staff positions in Vancouver and Surrey only. If you are a candidate from the general public, you will have to pay for any expenses related to your participation in this staffing process, as well as any relocation costs if you receive an offer of employment from this process. 

Applicants are expected to reside within reasonable commuting distance from the CRA office(s) located within Vancouver and Surrey. You will not be reimbursed for any mileage and/or travel time related to commuting into the office

Who can apply

The interested students need to meet the following requirements:

  • Live in Canada or be a Canadian citizen living abroad
  • Be registered as a full-time* student in a university program of a recognized postsecondary institution that includes a specialization in accounting in Winter 2022 (January) and/or Fall 2022 (September).

*or part-time basis due to a disability, as recognized by the academic institution

Preference for appointment will be given to veterans, Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
 
To be eligible, you must download the following documents:

  • your most recent transcript in the Education section of your Candidate profile in ISS
  • your proof of full-time enrollment in a university program at a recognized post-secondary institution that includes an specialization in accounting in Winter 2022 and/or Fall 2022
  • your CV (You must upload your resume in the "Documents" section of your Candidate Profile and attach it to your application in Step 3: Select documents (select the box) prior to "Submit Application".) 

These documents must be attached to your application at the time you apply, otherwise your application may not be considered further. If you do not have proof of registration at the moment, you will have to submit it later when requested. The job offers will be conditional upon reception of the proof of registration.

Assessment

There is no Essential staffing requirements for this staffing process.

Assessments will be conducted virtually.

You are expected to make yourself available for assessment when scheduled. Assessments will only be rescheduled for exceptional circumstances. The staffing board will make these decisions on a case by case basis.

Asset staffing requirements may also be assessed/applied during the staffing process, which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Year of study in the university accounting program  
  • Specific university program related to the position being filled (ex: Bachelor of commerce with a specialization in accounting)
  • Grade point average (GPA)
  • Performance
  • Korn Ferry test
  • Ability to communicate verbally in English
  • Ability to plan and organize your workload
  • Start date
  • Availability throughout the duration of a temporary appointment
  • Experience related to the position being filled
  • Employment Equity: Being an indigenous student

Conditions of employment

The conditions will vary depending on the position being filled. The offer could include one or more of the following conditions:

  • Reliability/Security - Reliability Status
  • Overtime Required
  • Valid Driver's License or personal mobility to a degree normally associated with the possession of a driver's license
  • Willingness to work on evenings and/or on weekends
  • Willingness to follow training and pass it
