We are looking for dynamic candidates who are passionate about taxation but also about the combination of the use of accounting techniques, auditing and investigations in a context of non-compliance with tax laws.

 

As a tax auditor, you will be called upon to audit files that are part of the following programs, without being limited to: the observation of taxpayers doing business abroad or holding property there, the audit of groups of wealthy taxpayers, the audit of tax promoters, the audit aimed at aggressive tax planning aspects, the audit of large companies and the audit of small and medium enterprises.

 

Main positions available

 

Tax auditor (AU0143, AU0144 and AU0133)

Conducts income tax audits of large and complex businesses, including corporations, partnerships and trusts. Works independently or as a member of an integrated team to ensure compliance with the laws governed by the Canada Revenue Agency.

 

Tax Avoidance Auditor (AU0163, AU0239 and AU0407)

Conducts income tax audits of domestic and international abusive tax avoidance schemes of large and complex businesses, including corporations, partnerships, trusts and high net worth individuals. Works independently or as a member of a team to ensure compliance with laws governed by the Agency.

 

International Tax Auditor (AU0335, AU0336 and AU408)

Conducts income tax audits of large, complex multinational enterprises, including corporations, partnerships and trusts, on international tax issues to ensure compliance with the laws governed by the Agency.

 

Investigator (AU0613)

Conducts forensic investigations of complex tax evasion and fraud cases against the Crown in relation to legislation administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), including cases where taxpayers are involved with criminal organizations as defined in the Criminal Code, or have participated in illegal activities or organized crime.

 

Financial Reviewer (AU0110, AU0107, AU0160)

Ensures compliance with the provisions of the Income Tax Act (ITA) and other statutes administered by the Canada Revenue Agency, consistency in the application of the law and delivery of tax incentives in a timely manner, through financial reviews of claimants'* income tax returns and through promotion of programs and education of clients and the public.

Qualified members and former members of the Canadian Forces who receive an offer of employment are not entitled to relocation costs from the CRA. They may, however, be entitled to a final relocation from the Department of National Defence.

 

COVID-19 context

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, public health recommendations and restrictions are in place across Canada and may change depending on circumstances. Therefore, most work is done remotely and virtually. However, office attendance may eventually be required when normal operations resume. Essential staffing requirement(s)

To be eligible, you must meet the following requirements.

  1. Minimum 12 months of tax compliance experience* within the last five years. 
     
  2. Education
  • Possess the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation; or
  • Be eligible for a CPA designation; or
  • Posses a degree from a recognized postsecondary institution with acceptable specialization in accounting*

 

*Acceptable specialization in accounting

 

For the purposes of the AU minimum education standard , acceptable specialization in accounting must include the following mandatory study area and two of four optional study areas:

 

Mandatory study areas:

 

Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) Advanced Financial Reporting or FA4 or Advanced Financial Accounting or Advanced Accounting

 

Two of four optional study areas:

 

  1. CPA Audit and Assurance or AU1 or Auditing or Internal Auditing or Internal Control
  2. CPA Introductory Management Accounting or MA1 or Cost Accounting or Management Accounting 1 and 2
  3. CPA Intermediate Management Accounting or MA2 or Management Accounting or Management Accounting 4 or Advanced Management Accounting
  4. CPA Information Technology or MS1 or Accounting Information Systems or Information and Computer Systems or Management Information Systems

 

Note: If you studied abroad, please provide a copy of your university diploma as well as the comparative evaluation of studies completed outside Quebec issued by the Ministère de l'Immigration, de la Francisation et de l'Intégration du Québec or an equivalent Canadian organization (link). In addition to the comparative evaluation, you must demonstrate that you have successfully completed the required courses corresponding to the AU-Verification standard (link) or that you are eligible for an accounting designation. You can obtain course equivalencies from a recognized Canadian university or from the CPA Order, as applicable.

* Experience

Recent and significant* experience in complying with federal or provincial corporate tax laws in an accounting firm, business, corporation, partnership, trust, provincial tax authority, or public or quasi-public institution performing one or more of the following functions:

 

  • Conducting audits of businesses or corporations to ensure compliance under the federal and/or provincial Income Tax Act;

 

  • Prepare, review or approve tax returns for corporations;

 

  • Work or participate in the development of tax planning for corporations;

 

  • Work on international tax and/or transfer pricing issues related to a corporation;

 

  • Interpreting or providing tax advice under income tax law relating to foreign transactions and/or international files

 

  • Providing tax advice or interpretations under the Income Tax Act at the federal and/or provincial level.

 

*Recent and significant experience is normally associated with the performance of these duties in primary duties performed for a period totaling between 12 and 36 cumulative months within the last five years.

 

This process will be used to fill various positions at the AU-04, AU-03 and AU-02 levels. Levels will be determined based on demonstrated experience.
