What does the job entail?

As a tax auditor, you will be called upon to audit files that are part of the following programs, without being limited to: the observation of taxpayers doing business abroad or holding property there, the audit of groups of wealthy taxpayers, the audit of tax promoters, the audit aimed at aggressive tax planning aspects, the audit of large companies and the audit of small and medium enterprises.

Potential positions to be staffed via this process include, but are not limited to: Income Tax Auditor, Tax Avoidance Auditor and International Tax Auditor. In addition, hiring managers could use his process to staff similar positions at the AU-02 group and level in other divisions and branches of the CRA.

What is the intent of this process?

The intent of this process is to create pools of eligible candidates at  locations nationwide where positions are available or vacancies exist. Work locations for which you will be considered will be based on the address in your Candidate profile, with the aim of maximizing your opportunities to be considered in this process. Permanent CRA employees at the AU-02 group and level: Lateral moves within the AU group will not be offered as part of this staffing process. You may create and update your profile in the CRA National Mobility Bank to facilitate lateral moves, and you are encouraged to continue to apply to other staffing processes.

Permanent CRA employees who occupy an equivalent or lower level position outside the AU group: You are encouraged to apply for this opportunity to join the audit field, however you must still meet the essential education and experience listed in this job posting.

Candidates will have the opportunity to specify for which language requirements they wish to be considered from the following: English Essential, French Essential or Bilingual Imperative (French and English – various levels).

Who can apply?

What do you need to apply?

To be eligible, you must meet the following essential requirements at the time you submit your application. More information regarding the requirements will be detailed in the questionnaires.

  • CRA's minimum education standard for AU; and
  • A minimum of twelve (12) cumulative months of experience in the last five (5) years in ONE of the options below as a part of your major job duties.

Option 1: Experience acquired outside of CRA

Have experience with businesses, partnerships, corporations, or trusts; acquired in a provincial tax administration, a public practice, a parapublic practice or an industry performing at least one of the following functions:

  • Conducting or managing audits  to ensure compliance under the Income Tax Act, Excise Tax Act or provincial tax acts;
  • Prepare, review or approve tax returns or financial statements for corporations or trusts or GST/HST returns;
  • Administering accounting policies of a partnership, corporation or trust;
  • Providing tax advice under the Income Tax Act, Excise Tax Act or provincial tax acts;
  • Interpreting statutes administered by the CRA.

This experience may be acquired in a work context or during a period of practical experience designed to obtain an accounting designation from a recognized professional association (CPA, CGA, CMA, CA).


Option 2: Experience acquired within CRA

Have experience conducting or managing audits or examinations (or audit or examination support) while appointed at the AU-01 group and level (or equivalent or higher). The experience may include, but will not be limited to, experience in Audit, Business Intelligence & Quality Assurance (BIQA), Appeals, Criminal Investigations or Scientific Research & Experimental Development (SR&ED) to administer or enforce the Income Tax Act or the Excise Tax Act.


Option 3: Combination

A combination of experience under Options 1 and 2.


What is the next step?

Candidates will move forward in the process depending on the staffing needs and vacancies. If you are identified as a potential candidate for an opportunity, the staffing board will screen your application. If you meet the essential requirements mentioned above, you will be notified.

Further assessments may be conducted to identify candidates for appointment. Any additional asset requirements will be communicated to candidates prior to being assessed or used.
